The Ambassador of Spain in Honduras, Mr. Luis Belzuz de los Ríos, visited the Zamorano campus on February 6th in response to an invitation from Zamorano’s President, Dr. Roberto Cuevas García. The Ambassador was accompanied by his wife, Mrs. Luisa Carretero de Belzuz and the Embassy Advisor/Deputy Head, Mrs. María Luisa Benítez -Donoso Tarascón.
Mr. Belzuz said that the embassy would examine the possibility of renewing collaboration between the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation and Development (AECID, Spanish acronym) and Zamorano. In the past, there was a close relationship between the two institutions. “I will ask the Director of AECID in Honduras to investigate the possibility of renewing this collaboration. It could involve Zamorano’s participation in agricultural fairs in Spain or in wind energy projects. The positive thing is that we already have a history of cooperation, which will facilitate the possibility of future support,” said the Ambassador.
The Director of Institutional Advancement, Dr. Raúl Zelaya, briefly related the history of Zamorano to the representatives of the Spanish government, emphasizing that this year marks seven decades of service to the Americas and the world.
The Ambassador and his party also learned about the academic programs of the four undergraduate agricultural engineering careers offered at Zamorano. The career directors described the competitive advantages of the graduates in each specialty. The visitors also toured the Dairy Processing Plant, the Laboratory of Applied Biotechnology and the Integrated Pest Management Program for Central America (PROMIPAC, Spanish acronym).
Mr. Belzuz expressed his admiration and respect for Zamorano’s international prestige, its Panamericanism, the mixture of cultures on its residential campus and the harmonious coexistence of the university community. To date, there have been three Spanish Zamorano graduates, and currently a young Spanish woman is studying at the institution.
