The social mission is an extremely important aspect of the Alison Bixby Stone School. When recommending ABSS for initial accreditation the representatives of AdvancEd described the school as a model of Social Justice. This environment is created by the various aspects of the social mission.
Scholarship Program
Children from the surrounding rural communities, who are economically disadvantaged, receive scholarships to attend ABSS. Forty percent of the students at ABSS receive some level of financial assistance from the Zemmuray Foundation or individual donors.
Teacher Training
The teachers at ABSS provide training for public school teachers in nearby villages. These monthly trainings are planned in conjunction with the local education authorities and are based on a needs assessment given at the beginning of the Honduran school year. In addition, ABSS provides training to other rural nonprofit bilingual schools.
Jovenes en Camino
Our social service club, made up of students in grades 4 through 6, makes weekly visits to Jovenes en Camino, a nearby orphanage. Our students and teachers take games, books and playground equipment to share with these children. Our students also collect gifts for the December holidays. ABSS also provides one scholarship per year and currently has five children from Jovenes attending ABSS.
