Academic Dean Letter

At Zamorano we offer young people from different places and social strata a quality education and the technical tools necessary for them to become professionals ready to overcome the challenges currently facing Latin America and the world.

We have the competitive advantage of being the only university in the region to offer an undergraduate education specialized in the value chain and which, in addition, efficiently applies both theory and practice. In 2002 we streamlined our curriculum by establishing the 4 x4 system (four careers in four years) in order to diversify the education of our graduates and at the same time expand their opportunities in the labor market.

The four year program includes the first two years known as the General Curriculum and two more years of specialization. In the General Curriculum we offer our students a common study plan with general subjects combine with practical work modules.

At the end of their second year, our students have the opportunity to choose a two year specialization, choosing between Food Agroindustry, Agribusiness Management, Agricultural Science and Production and Socioeconomic Development and Environment.

During the first, second and third years Learning by Doing is the same for all the careers, and is carried out in our agricultural production fields, in our agroindustrial park or in our research laboratories. In the fourth year Learning by Doing is different and specialized for each career. This process involves our students in scientific research and business leadership, in addition to human resource management through supervising students in the first three years in their Learning by Doing process. In addition it gives them experience in the resolution of real problems in the productive and administrative process.

In accordance with Zamorano’s mandate, our four careers are targeted at offering practical and applicable solutions to the sustainable management of natural resources and the environment, rural development to reduce poverty, and the global competitiveness of both small and large regional agricultural companies.

Our zeal to maintain educational excellence and be in the vanguard of agricultural education motivates us to periodically revise the study plans of the careers to guarantee that our students are obtaining the best and cutting edge techniques. This ensures that when they graduate they can find suitable positions in an increasingly competitive labor market.

That is how we strive to be a university in tune with a changing environment, diversifying the education, specializing the practical work, adapting the curriculum to present day needs and constantly keeping true the Zamorano essence of forming leaders for the Americas.

We invite you to learn more about our careers in the Programs section.
