Zamorano’s animal feed plant teaches students the development of special animal feeds for cattle, pork, fish and poultry.
The professors of the Agricultural Science and Production career prepare different food formulas or diets according to the protein and carbohydrate needs of each animal. The students then develop formulas using specialized equipment and package them into 100 pound bags. Soy flour, coconut, shrimp, meat and corn are used to prepare these animal feeds.
The feed produced is used in the university’s production units and is also sold to neighboring farms in the area. The plant plays an important role, not only in providing inputs for the production units, but also in the application of theory to practice in the field of animal nutrition.
Innovation
The fourth year students work with time flow models in order to streamline work processes, make a larger number of daily deliveries and reduce production costs.
Outreach
The animal feed plant provides different workshops, especially directed at cattle ranchers from rural communities in Honduras and El Salvador. With this training, the ranchers learn techniques and processes for the development of balanced feed for different types of livestock.
Profits
The animal feed plant’s profits are allocated to the students’ scholarship fund.
