Dear Visitors:
I cordially welcome you to the web site of the Pan-American Agricultural School (generally known as Zamorano), a private international university founded in 1942 in the Yeguare Valley, Honduras. Zamorano is the result of the inspiration and support of Samuel Zemurray, an American visionary, businessman, and philanthropist. Dr. Wilson Popenoe the first director (1941-1957), a widely recognized botanist and horticulturist of his time, who had had extensive experience in the tropical region and acquired a profound respect for Latin America and the Caribbean, helped to set the stage for the growth and development of the institution that today stands as a world-class university, which serves Latin America with excellence.
Zamorano is an institution in a process of continuing evolution, which incorporates current technology and applied research to the different links in the agricultural value chain as well as to the management of the environment and our natural resources. Zamorano seeks to set the standard for academic excellence in the region; our campus offers students a incomparable natural environment, an extensive educational infrastructure, a talented and dedicated faculty and staff and a proven integrated learning system of extraordinary quality aimed at the education of Latin America’s youth. Here, the young men and women of our region strengthen their values, develop their character and leadership capabilities, and actively grow as young professionals and persons, through our learning-by-doing methodology. Practically half of the students’ time at the university, throughout the four years of their education, involves agricultural field work, as well as hands-on environmental conservation, agro-industry and agribusiness experiences, on our exceptional campus that combines contemporary facilities with a classic aesthetic.
Our academic programs are a direct response to the challenges facing Latin America and the Caribbean today, such as: the sustainable management of our natural resources and the protection of our environment; the transformation of the rural sector and the reduction of poverty; value added improvements to our products and services; and, fostering innovation and global competitiveness.
In addition to our bachelor’s degree programs in engineering, our applied research and outreach projects are widely recognized for their success in generating comprehensive and creative solutions to regional problems. These projects are broadly focused on rural communities, forest lands, watershed basins, small and large agricultural and agro-industrial enterprises, as well as the domestic, regional and global marketplace.
One of the special strengths of Zamorano is the diversity of our student body, with youngsters coming from many different socioeconomic, ethnic and cultural backgrounds and from throughout the Pan-American region. We also enjoy such diversity among our faculty and instructors.
Notably, we offer the opportunity for a world-class education to young people from low-income families in the region; 75 percent of our students receive financial assistance to complete their four-year programs, in many cases through full scholarships. The only requirement is a commitment to successfully serve their countries and their region in their chosen professional fields.
Zamorano offers all this and much more. We cordially invite you to explore our web site and to take the time to get to know us better.
Welcome to Zamorano.
