Welcome to the third issue of “¡Soluciones!” Zamorano’s outreach magazine. You probably already know that Zamorano University is a leading academic institution in Latin America, dedicated to providing a first-class education to students from throughout the region regardless of their background or financial needs. What you may not know is that at the same time Zamorano University undertakes a number of institutional outreach programs intended to alleviate major problems in Latin America. Our experts design and implement programs which combat chronic poverty, improve agricultural yields, advance the region’s competive edge in the global economy, encourage the sustainable use of natural resources, and protect the environment.
In other words, our expert faculty and staff — often with the involvement of our students — promote solutions to modern-day problems. “Soluciones,” pronounced, “Soh-loo-see-oh-ness,” means “solutions” in spanish. We think this word accurately describes the technical assistance, training and social welfare work we do to combat chronic problems in the region.
Please feel free to share ¡Soluciones! with anyone you believe would be interested in reading it.
Special Issue: Biofuel Crop Production
2nd Issue: Zamorano Promotes Fish Production in Central America
In this issue, we spotlight Zamorano’s aquaculture program which has been teaching students and training rural farmers since the mid-1970s. Dr. Dan Meyer, director of the aquaculture department, and his team promote tilapia farming in rural areas of Honduras and Central America, and investigate new methods to efficiently produce the fish, an affordable source of protein for impoverished people in rural areas. Their work is paying off: once the “poor man’s fish,” Tilapia is now growing in demand regionally, and provides more than $60 million in sales from Honduras to the United States each year.
1st Issue: Integrated Pest Management Program
