I believe education is the best gift you can give someone, and is especially true for many Zamorano students who come from impoverished places and have faced significant difficulties to come here. We give them the ability to become selfsufficient, capable of facing the challenges ahead, and eager and able to succeed.
I’m especially pleased that I’ve been able to set up partnerships with in-country businesses to give the students real life experience. For example, last year the fourth year students in Agribusiness Management took a portion of the vegetables — green beans, onions, cucumbers and cabbage — produced by first year students and sold them to Walmart’s produce buyers. The students donated most of the proceeds to the Student Care Packages program on campus (a volunteer organization which donates packages of toiletries and other basic necessities to students of particular need). I was very proud they combined an entrepreneurial spirit with a sense of public responsibility.
