Strategic Planning 2011 – 2016

Food Science and Technology is one of the four programs offered by the Escuela Agricola Panamericana, Zamorano University.  The first program curriculum was approved in 1999.

In 2005, as established program, Food Science and Technology set its strategic objectives to strengthen its philosophy of academic excellence and student-centered teaching. Besides these objectives there was a concern to maintain and increase the student enrollment in the department and and develop a curriculum for international accreditation. Several activities developed by faculty and staff during this period, achieved a stable number of 100-110 students in the department.

In the continuous process of improvement and despite the progress during the 2005-2010 period, two quality diagnoses were made to programs offered by Zamorano. Both documents were the result of qualitative analysis made by external consultants linked to the institution and higher education. The report by professors from universities in the United States, named The Pell Report, indicated the need to reduce classroom hours, as well as the need to assess the impact of our program through our graduates and employers. Another important diagnostic tool for curriculum revision was made by Joost Teuben, Dutch consultant, who suggested a constant update of class topics and flexibility of programs between departments, in order to integrate the knowledge of production, processing and agricultural marketing.

Based on the external assessment and the students and professors surveys, the Food Science and Technology Department elaborated this strategic plan as the beginning of a period where the focus is to continue developing leaders for the food industry and  to become one of the most recognized and prestigious programs in the Latin-American region.
