Since its foundation in 1942 with a focus on agronomy, Zamorano has continued on a path that makes it today the best agricultural university in Latin America. This program has provided the region with hundreds of agronomists who substantially contributed to the development of their countries. Today the agricultural production sector is faced with new challenges that are very different from those in past decades.
Globalization and the progressive liberalization of global agricultural markets represent an important stimulus for countries in the region to try to increase the international production and competitiveness of their agricultural production. Within this panorama, producers have to face current challenges like the exponential growth of the world population, the reduction of available land for agricultural production and environmental phenomena such as climate change. Furthermore, rural to urban migration is leaving rural areas without the human resources needed to produce the land. In summary, the challenge for our graduates is to produce for a larger number of people with fewer human and natural resources, taking into account measures that counteract adverse environmental effects.
Latin America needs professionals with the ability to lead the development of the agricultural sector. In the Agricultural Science and Production career we focus on competitive and sustainable production. We produce agronomic engineers that apply science and technology to improve productivity and that know how to direct, improve and manage the productive processes of agriculture. They are able to successfully compete in global markets, as well as responsibly manage natural resources.
In our attempt to maintain our excellence and leadership, our students also deepen their knowledge of innovative areas, such as propagation by means of tissue culture, the study of organic and transgenic cultures, integrated pest management and biological control, technified production of milk and poultry nutrition, among others.
Our professors have specialized at the master’s and doctoral level in the career’s scientific branches: plant breeding and animal husbandry.
In the labor market our graduates are our best letter of presentation. Many of them are or have been ministers, managers of private and public institutions and renowned agricultural entrepreneurs. Currently the job perspective for our graduates has expanded, with many large international organizations demanding their services where they also stand out as project managers and renowned consultants.
