Editorial: Biofuels


In recent years there has been a huge expansion of areas cultivated with biofuel crops. Key factors that have led to this growth include rising petroleum prices and the need to reduce carbon emissions. The increase in biofuel crops has taken place principally in the tropical countries where it could prove provide an economic stimulus, especially in rural areas where poverty is concentrated. However, at the same time there is a large degree of concern regarding its scale and environmental effects.
