About Us

ABSS is an accredited school with a social mission, providing a high quality education for Honduran children. We believe that if students create, perform and experiment, or solve real-life problems, learning becomes concrete and enjoyable. Our teachers promote active, hands-on learning that reinforces the relevance of what they learn. At ABSS we have access to Zamorano's experienced faculty, state-of-the-art learning laboratories and athletics facilities. As an integral part of the Zamorano learning community, the students in ABSS develop an environmental awareness.

The Zamorano Pan-American Agricultural School (Escuela Agrícola Panamericana Zamorano), generally known as El Zamorano, is a private,  university located in the valley of the Yeguare, Fco Morazán, Honduras. Zamorano offers young people from different countries and backgrounds the opportunity to become professional leaders with skills and values, capable of transforming companies and organizations to respond to current challenges in Latin America and the world. In order to serve the needs of the EAP’s employees, a small bilingual elementary school was founded in 1953 within the Zamorano campus. With the name of Alison Bixby Stone School, in memory of the daughter of Doris Zemurray, who was known as 'Zamorano's godmother'; ABSS began to follow Zamorano's purpose and ideals. The Alison Bixby Stone School serves students from the surrounding areas, providing a challenging and interactive bilingual education. In its continued push towards professionalization, ABSS initiated the SACS (Southern Association of Schools and Colleges) accreditation process in 2005, and in 2009, ABSS officially became part of the Escuela Agricola Panamericana. In a memorandum recognizing the merger, the EAP noted that the quality education offered at ABSS was instrumental in allowing the university to recruit and retain quality faculty and staff.

Is to provide children of diverse social-economic and cultural backgrounds a stimulating and challenging educational environment that fosters intellectual, social and emotional growth while instilling an awareness of environmental responsibility and the understanding that learning is a life-long process that is both meaningful and enjoyable
Is to be considered as one of the top bilingual elementary schools and teacher training centers in Central America in terms of curriculum, instruction, and assessment.

High standards of excellence: ABSS believes that there is no substitute for academic rigor, and holds high expectations for all of its students. Teachers work closely with students, fostering respectful behavior while encouraging higher-level thinking skills to help each child reach his or her academic, social and emotional potential. This helps prepare all children to become responsible global citizens.

Student-centered, Inquiry-based: ABSS believes in a student-centered, inquiry-based approach to teaching and learning. Therefore we have a maximum class size of 18. Teachers seek to maintain an intimate environment in which they are able to respond to the individual academic needs and adjust for the learning style of each student. In addition, the small class size ensures both physical and emotional safety for all children. Assessment is done for learning as well as of learning.

Learning-by-doing: ABSS believes that if students create, perform and experiment, or solve a real-life problem, learning becomes concrete and enjoyable. At ABSS, teachers promote active, hands-on learning that constantly reinforces to the students the relevance of what they learn. ABSS students and teachers have access to Zamorano’s experienced faculty, state-of-the-art learning laboratories and athletics facilities. As an integral part of the Zamorano learning community, the students of ABSS develop an environmental awareness which they will carry into adulthood.

A culture of learning among its members: ABSS believes that learning is a process teachers must engage in continuously in order to meet the needs of our students. To facilitate this process, ABSS’ teaching staff collaborate during weekly professional development sessions, participate in a summer reading program, and meet regularly with the Academic Mentor to reflect on their classroom practice.

Commitment to the community: ABSS believes the gifts of our students and teachers should be shared with the greater community whenever possible. For this reason, teachers are encouraged to seek advanced degrees and additional training, and those who do are encouraged to share best practice with their peers though informal conversation, modeling, and training. In addition, ABSS teachers provide training for other Honduran teachers at conferences or in sessions planned and sponsored by ABSS. Furthermore, ABSS sponsors a social service club that shares games with and organizes activities for residents of a local orphanage, has volunteered at a local soup kitchen, and organizes environmental activities such as river clean ups and reforestation campaigns.

The Alison Bixby Stone School is dedicated to excellence in teaching and learning. The curriculum and instruction at ABSS aims to help students become bi-literate in English and Spanish, as well as to become mathematically and scientifically literate. ABSS addresses the intellectual, emotional, social, and physical growth of each child through creative, challenging, and academically rigorous programs

About Us

cinthia CanoThe “Escuelita”, as we affectionately call the Alison Bixby Stone School, is a not-for-profit school with a successful history, evidenced by professionals who today make up the working environment of Honduras and other countries.

The ABSS goes back 63 years ago, when a group of parents decided to open it for EAP – Zamorano’s employees’ children, since then and until today, ABSS has exceeded the expectations on learning, social and intellectual skills.

Since the school year begins, the walls recover their color, laughs take over the hallways, and windows perceive academic experiences of children that come to school aiming for knowledge. The school comes back to life!!!

Alison Bixby has graduated students from 6th grade for many years, and now it has taken the challenge to expand on its academic offer and the infrastructure. A new building for middle school will host for the first time students from 6th, 7th and 8th grade. A new moment in ABSS history.

The philosophy of teaching, learning by doing; inherited from the Agricultural University of Zamorano, student-centered, and independent learning is what makes us unique. Students learn in an open, healthy environment with high quality teachers, and committed moral values.
