United States: Plant Management Research

Intern: Stephanie Nicole Escalier Miranda, Agricultural Science and Production

Stephanie did her internship in the Biological Control Laboratory of the Enthomology Department at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana USA. Dr. Steve Yaninek is the Director of the laboratory, and he introduced Stephanie to a research project related to two different Conventional Pest Management (CPM) and Integrated Pest Management (IPM) treatments. The project was developed in 2018 and 2019 and run in five distinct Indiana locations where watermelon is grown.

From this research, Stephanie had the chance to work on a specific project helping identify the sub lethal effect of the Carabidae, Harpalus pensylvanicus DeGree y Poecilus chalcites Say beetle species. Her work included measuring the length of the elytra, the length of the femur, and the pronotal width and length of each scarab to see if there were any morphological changes between treatments and places. She separated male and female beetles to learn distinctions by gender for these two species.
